ABSTRACT

Francis P. Hanrahan Honored by USDA

A double honor came on May 10 to FRANCIS P. HANRAHAN, 9007 Alton Parkway, Silver Spring, Maryland, from the U. S. Department of Agriculture. He was given a pin signifying the completion of 40 years' service as a chemical engineer with the Department, and he also received USDA's Superior Service Award for the discovery of foam-spray drying, a new dehydration process for dairy products.

Mr. Hanrahan was presented with both awards in Washington by SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE ORVILLE L. FREEMAN in ceremonies at the outdoor Sylvan Theater on the grounds of the Washington Monument.

Mr. Hanrahan's process consists of incorporating nitrogen or other inert gas into a dairy concentrate to be spray-dried. The gas disperses the concentrate in the form of tiny bubbles instead of liquid droplets. In this form the concentrate dries much more rapidly than by conventional means.

Foam-spray drying, as Mr. Hanrahan's process is known, has already achieved commercial importance as the first practical method of drying Cottage cheese whey.
