WILLARD OMER NELSON was born on September 27, 1914, in Urbana, Illinois, and lived many of his early years in Tuscola, Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois and received his B.S. degree in 1937. From 19371943, he was employed in the Research and Development Laboratory of Wilson and Co., and during this period received the M.S. degree from the College of Medicine of the University of Illinois. He served in the U.S. Medical Corps from 1943–1946, attaining the rank of Captain.
He returned to the University of Illinois in 1946 as an Assistant Professor of Bacteriology in the Dairy Science Department and received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois in 1951. He was elevated to the ranks of Associate Professor in 1953 and Professor in 1958. He was head of the Bacteriology Division of the Dairy Science Department and a senior staff member of the Center for Zoonoses Research. In 1963, he was appointed Assistant Director of the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station.
