ABSTRACT
Selection is often based on the expected breeding value (EBV) of an individual, given some particular phenotypic information on that individual, his relatives, or his progeny (3). In this note a general expression for the standard error of estimate of an EBV,
(EBV), will be derived. This will then be used to derive standard errors for the EBV of a sire based on his contemporary comparison proof (1), and the EBV of a dam based on the difference between her average production and the average production of her contemporaries in the same herd (her contemporary difference). It may be noted at this point that given the EBVs of a sire and dam, and their respective standard errors, the EBV of their offspring will be
