American Dairy Science Association, Department of Food Science Michigan State University, East Lansing
ABSTRACT
The Student Affiliates represent a very vital part of the American Dairy Science Association. They add vigor and a sustaining confidence to the future of the 58-year-old organization.
Briefly, the story of the Student Affiliates involves: a) an early suggestion, 1924, for the creation of junior memberships; b) participation of dairy majors at an annual meeting; c) vision of a few members to encourage student membership; d) idea of Secretary Stoltz to assure future membership in the Association by obtaining low-fee Student Affiliate memberships; e) active statewide competition for increased student membership; f) waning of enthumasm for encouragement of student membership per se; g) revision of constitution and bylaws to provide for Student Affiliates and Junior Chapters; h) establishment of Junior Chapters; i) need for faculty guidance to the newly formed units; j) appointment of a committee to study and implement existing Student Affiliate chapters; k) recognition by Association presidents to the potentiality of the renewed Student Affiliate program; l) establishment of chapter and graduate student competition; m) inclusion of a Student News Section in the JOURNAL; n) formation of a National Student Branch of the Association; and o) affiliate recognition of meritorious services performed by committee members and Student Branch officers.
