Dioctylphtalate as a Reference Material for Differential Thermal Analysis

ABSTRACT

Conflicting reports as to the usefulness of dioctylphtalate (DOP) as a reference material for differential thermal analysis (DTA) have been published. Haighton and Hannewijk (2) claimed that DOP does not solidify at -70 C. Cantabrana and deMan (1), however found that DOP was unsuitable because it showed heat effects associated with solidification between -40 and -10 C and recommended the use of tributyrin as a reference material. To determine the cause of this apparent disagreement on the suitability of DOP, the matter was studied at the two laboratories involved. The DOP used by Cantabrana and deMan (1) was sent to the Unilever Research Laboratory and the results reported in their paper could be confirmed. The DOP used by the Unilever Research Laboratory was sent to the University of Alberta and trials were made whereby the DTA cell was charged with the combinations DOP(URL) and tributyrin, and DOP(URL) and DOP (Alberta).
