ABSTRACT
The Weigh-a-Day-a-Month plan is a simple and low-cost system of keeping dairy records on milk production. The major purposes of these records are for (1) culling low-producing, unprofitable cows, (2) feeding each cow according to productive capacity, and (3) selecting the best cows from which to raise replacements. This study was a comparison of dairy farmers in three different stages concerning adoption of Weigh-a-Day-a-Month—1) those using the plan (called participators), 2) those having tried but discontinued the plan (called drop-outs), and 3) those having never tried it (called nonparticipators) according to selected aspects of their dairy operations.
EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
Data were obtained by a personal interview with 63 dairy farmers in De Soto Parish, using a prepared questionnaire. These 63 dairymen represented 18 participators, the total number in the parish participating in Weigh-a-Day-a-Month at the time of the study; 18 drop-outs, the total number who had participated in Weigh-a-Day-a-Month, had dropped out yet were still dairying, and 27 nonparticipators, who were selected as a random sample of the remaining 94 dairymen in the parish.
