Fordyce Ely Retires at Ohio State University
DR. FORDYCE ELY, Chairman of the Department of Dairy Science of The Ohio State University and Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station, retired June 30, 1963. Prior to coming to Ohio in January, 1948, he had been professor of Dairy Husbandry in charge of the Dairy Section at the University of Kentucky since 1928.
Fordyce Ely was born in St. Croix Falls (Polk County), Wisconsin, on January 25, 1898. He farmed as a youth and attended Central High School in St. Paul, Minnesota. In January 1916, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota. His graduation as president of the senior class was deferred because he took time out during part of a year to participate in World War I. Thereafter, he worked successively as herdsman for a combined herd owned by the breeders and in 1920 as field man in charge of quality milk production for the Twin City Milk Producers Association.
