ABSTRACT
All production-testing programs require periodic weighing of the milk from individual cows. For many years the weights were obtained with spring scales. With the advent of pipeline installations various milk-metering devices have become available. The American Dairy Science Association has approved the device known as the Milk-o-Meter. O'Dell et al. (2) have described the operation of this meter. They have also reported on the accuracy of this meter for weighing and sampling milk for fat tests. Hupp et al. (1) have also reported similar studies. Rennie et al. (3) found good agreement between the fat tests of metered samples as compared to conventional production-testing sampling.
The Department of Dairy Science at Clemson College has been using Milk-o-Meters daily for 4.5 yr for determining the weights of milk produced by individual cows. These meters are also used for milk sampling. O'Dell et al. (2) have shown that more pump capacity is required when Milk-o-Meters are inserted in the milk line.
