ABSTRACT
Aspartic acid deamination by bacteria found in the rumen of the sheep was studied. The deaminating activity was proportional to the concentration of bacterial nitrogen. Boiled preparation had no activity. The activity temperature curve was typical of enzymatic reaction. From these results, it was concluded that the aspartic acid deaminating activity in bacteria found in the rumen of the sheep was an enzymatic reaction.
The optimum pH was 7.0. The optimum temperature was 39 C. Apparent Michaelis constant was 2 x 10–3. It was clearly demonstrated that the enzyme had an essential thiol group. These results indicated that aspartic acid deaminating enzyme in bacteria found in the rumen of the sheep was a kind of aspartase.
