ABSTRACT

This book is the published data which were presented at a symposium organized by the American Society of Zoologists, co-sponsored by the Society of General Physiologists, and presented at the New York meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in December, 1960. The symposium was concerned primarily with the characteristics, significance, and mechanism of spermatozoan motility and was an integrated effort by cytologists, biophysicists, biochemists, physiologists, and practitioners.

This publication is an excellent collection of findings by eminent workers (17 chapters), together with their candid thoughts on the various espects of and approaches to motility mechanisms. Recent findings concerned with flagellar structure and propulsion, ionic and osmotic effects on metabolism, metabolism and motility relationships, cytoehemical and biomolecular aspects of spermatozoan motility, and associated factors are presented.

Particularly helpful to the reader is the fact that specific references are found throughout each chapter, and a complete list of references is printed at the end of each chapter so that the reader may gain appreciation for workers in the field and the contributions made by each.
