ABSTRACT
Suitable flow-through cuvettes to enable fast, routine reading of absorbance values in the dye-binding method of estimating milk protein have been difficult to obtain. The cuvette described by Ashworth et al. (1) has not been entirely satisfactory and is difficult to mount in some colorimeters. The cuvette described herein is simple, inexpensive to construct, and easy to mount in any instrument that will accept a 1-in. tube. It has been easily mounted and used successfully in the Bausch and Lomb Spectronic 20 colorimeter.
The cuvette body is machined from a 1-in. diameter rod of Type 303 stainless steel (Pacific Metals Company, San Francisco). This steel is readily machined and is not attacked by the chemicals used in any of the milk protein dye-binding procedures. The depth of the light path can be readily made to any desired specification.
The cuvette is made by machining a flat center section 1 in. in width,
in. above one end of the rod.
