ABSTRACT
This volume is a collection of papers presented at a symposium of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, held at Denver, Colorado, on 27–29 December, 1961. The primary concern of the symposium was land and water as related resources, with specific focus on the mountain and plains region of the United States. The general flavor of the presentation is interdisciplinary with contributors from economics, geography, geology, meteorology, animal husbandry, conservation, forestry, and law. Authors of the various papers represent government agencies, universities, research foundations, private business, and the U. S. Congress.
Part I is an introduction by the editor reviewing the purpose of the symposium and each of the three sections yet to come. This is a general perspective of the problems in land and water resource allocation, pointing up the need for inventory of resources, assessment of public needs, definition of the responsibility and functions of government, and establishment of policy criteria.
