Guideposts for Automation: Product Quality Aspects1

ABSTRACT

Several reasons may be cited for the rapid advance of automation in the dairy industry. From a product quality standpoint, here are some logical reasons:

  1. It helps to prevent the mood or attitude of the man from affecting his performance. His financial or personal problems are not as likely to affect his daily work habits and results.
  2. Work standards are raised through the elimination of many undesirable cleaning tasks.
  3. The man becomes a more important part of the labor force.
  4. Short cuts in some jobs are eliminated, as the complete cycle must be followed, once the proper control is activated.
  5. Control of temperature, time, strength of cleaning solutions, volume, and weights becomes more positive.
  6. A closed system of processing can be engineered, eliminating the possibility of contamination.
  7. The speed of the operation is set by the machine. This keeps operating personnel more alert.
