Influence of Breed and Milk Fat Percentage when Estimating Solids-Not-Fat in Milk of Individual Cows by the Plastic Bead Method of Golding1

R. E. Erb

Department of Animal Sciences, Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana

ABSTRACT

Erb et al. (3) earlier developed a single equation for estimating per cent solids-not-fat (SNF) in milk of individual cows when using the plastic bead method of Golding. Subsequent work has shown that an equation developed for milk of individual cows is unsatisfactory for herd milk (5) and that estimates can be refined for herd milk by using separate equations for within per cent milk fat intervals with variables plastic beads down, per cent milk fat, or per cent protein (2). Accordingly, the data of Erb et al. (3) have been re-examined to determine if accuracy of estimating per cent SNF could be improved for milk of individual cows. The results already reported briefly (1) are now presented in more detail.

The data re-examined included 1,388 milk samples from individual cows in 53 cooperator herds for which per cent protein was known in addition to per cent milk fat, plastic bead readings, and total solids determined by ovendrying (3).
