Growth Hormone Effects on Bovine Blood Plasma Fatty Acid Concentration and Metabolism1

Department of Dairy Science, University of Maryland, College Park

ABSTRACT

Blood plasma FFA concentrations have been determined in 22 dairy cows. Plasma PPA concentration averaged 0.84 ± 0.08 meq/liter. Treatment with growth hormone resulted in an average 50% increase in plasma FFA concentration 6 hr after administration. Four experiments indicated that growth hormone treatment probably resulted in increased acetate turnover.
