ABSTRACT

Dr. C. K. Johns Retires

Canada's best-known authority on milk sanitation, DR. C. K. JOHNS of Ottawa, retired October 31 after 36 years of distinguished service with the Canada Department of Agriculture. He was head of the Dairy Section of the Food Research Institute in Ottawa.

Dr. Johns earned an international reputation for his work in sanitation and quality control or milk and egg products. He is probably best known for the development of the triple-reading resazurin test, of preliminary-incubation tests for assessing the sanitary quality of milk, and of the proper use of detergents and sanitizers. During World War II he undertook a study of sanitation in the egg-drying industry and was directly responsible for the good reputation of Canadian egg products on the British market. He has published about 90 scientific papers and research bulletins and many extension and press articles.

Dr. Johns was elected president of the International Association of Milk and Food Sanitarians in 1934–35 and has served on editorial boards, various committees, and as executive of several societies and their journals. He has been called twice to Geneva to serve on FAO-WHO committees on Milk Hygiene, as Secretary and Chairman.
