ABSTRACT
Ruminal VFA determinations were made on four rumen fistulated Holsteins fed rations in which 90, 70, 50, or 30% of the ENE was supplied by concentrates. Digestible energy (DE) and TDN were determined along with milk production.
The requirements above maintenance per pound FCM from the 90, 70, 50, and 30% concentrate rations, respectively, were 0.55, 0.61, 0.71, and 0.82 therm DE and 0.28, 0.31, 0.35, and 0.40 lb TDN. The ENE required for FCM production was similar on all rations.
The relative amount of acetic acid decreased, and butyric acid increased as the per cent of concentrate in the ration increased (P < 0.05). Propionic acid levels were similar for all rations. Ruminal VFA concentrations tended to decrease as the concentrate level increased. A significant (P < 0.01) negative correlation was found between pounds of TDN per pound FCM and molar per cent butyric acid. TDN per pound FCM was positively correlated (P < 0.01) with both acetic-to-butyric acid ratio and average ruminal VFA concentrations. TDN per pound FCM was positively correlated (P < 0.05) with molar per cent acetic acid and the acetic-to-propionic acid ratio. Correlations of VFA and DE requirement for FCM production corresponded to those for TDN, but were slightly lower.
