United States Agency for International Development Programs in Dairying in Developing Countries

C. L. MoColloch

Agricultural Resources Division, Agency for International Development, Department of State, Washington, D.C.

ABSTRACT

The Agency For International Development (AID) assistance in dairying, as in other phases of agriculture, consists of economic and technical support. Importation of commodities, machinery, and equipment as donations to a developing country usually makes the headlines both in the host country and the United States and is often credited as being the AID assistance program. Technical assistance, being day-to-day work over a long period of time, is much less glamorous.

The Agency for International Development assistance is developed by projects through consultation and annual review by AID and host government officials. The priorities for funding of specific projects are established within the over-all total of funds available for the year. Once a project has been approved, a work plan, manpower requirements, and commodity needs are determined. Sometimes a survey by consultant specialists is desirable to evaluate project possibilities and recommend methods of approach.
