Confusion has arisen relative to the recommendation in Standard Methods for the Examination of Dairy Products, 11th edition, page 59, for use of certified media. Such a recommendation had not been included in previous editions.
The need for some system of insuring uniform productivity of bacteriological media, especially that for the standard plate count, is seldom questioned by those knowledgeable in this field. Consequently, several individuals who had been active for years in the preparation of various editions of Standard Methods devoted a great deal of effort during the interval between the publication of the 10th and 11th editions in exploring possible mechanisms for the certification of media, whereby reasonable assurance of productivity of various supplies might be assured. Several professional societies were approached with the suggestion that such a program be undertaken jointly or by one society that would act in the common interest. This approach was not successful; however, the principle of such a program was endorsed by these societies.
