ABSTRACT
This volume by Professor Johansson is a testimony to the increased tempo of research in dairy cattle genetics during the past one and one-half decades. Especially during the last decade, considerably more emphasis has been placed on planned genetic experiments in contrast to the earlier almost complete reliance on existing herd book data for genetic analyses. Some of the results of these planned experiments have become available and are included by Professor Johansson.
The chapters on approaches to dairy cattle improvement present a collation of latest results dealing with the immunogenetics, monozygous twins, inbreeding and crossbreeding, and applications of the progeny test. In addition, excellent reviews of current knowledge concerning the inheritance of quantitative traits such as longevity, fertility, body size, type, udder development, milking rate, and milk composition are presented. The coverage of udder development and milking rate is especially good, providing some original data in addition to previously published information on this topic.
