Symposium: The Team Approach to Solving Problems

An Extension Program in a Changing Agriculture

Henry L. Ahlgren

ABSTRACT

My assignment here this afternoon is a most pleasant one—to point out the need for modernizing, expanding, and strengthening our educational programs in the field you represent—and to take full advantage of the resources you have to bring this about.

This afternoon, I'd like to do three things:

(1) Take a brief look down the road of our agricultural yesteryears to see where we have been.
(2) Take a look at some of the changes likely to occur on our farms during the next 15 to 25 yr.
(3) Explore some of the challenges we face as Extension workers—and as an Extension Service—in view of these changes—if we are to continue to provide the core of a vital and dynamic educational program geared to meet the diverse and increasing needs of the people we are privileged to serve.

AGRICULTURE—PAST

Let's begin by going back to our history books for a few minutes.
