ABSTRACT
A total of 48 Holstein calves was used to study a system of management in which the animals were placed on pasture after weaning. In each of three seasons eight calves were fed pasture as the only source of roughage between 6 and 20 wk of age. Eight controls were maintained under barn-feeding conditions. Growth by the two groups during the experimental period was similar, and appeared to be affected somewhat by season and by forage quality. Calves on pasture gained an average of 157.5 lb during the 14-wk experimental period; those in the barn averaged 149.8. The standard errors of these two means were ± 5.2 and ± 5.5 lb, respectively. The pasture consumed substituted for 400 to 657 lb of hay per calf, depending upon the season.
