ABSTRACT

MEMORIAL

J. H. Frandsen

PROFESSOR JULIUS H. FRANDSEN, emeritus professor and head of the Department of Dairy Industry at the University of Massachusetts and a pioneer worker in dairy science and education, died at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston recently. He was 85 years old. He had been head of dairy departments in three state universities, Past-President of the American Dairy Science Association, founder and first editor of the JOURNAL OF DAIRY SCIENCE. His homes were in Amherst and Orlando, Florida.

Throughout his career, Professor Frandsen worked for the purity of milk supplies, encouraged the use of dairy products, advocated producers' cooperatives, and sought to improve the income of dairy farmers. After his academic retirement, he edited and published two technical books in the dairy field.

Proffessor Frandsen was born April 28, 1887, on a farm near Story City, Iowa, the son of Danish immigrant settlers. He was graduated from Iowa State College in 1902, and recieved his master's degree from Iowa State in 1904.
