ABSTRACT

My thought, as has been expressed by Harry (Trelogan) and Herb (Erdman) is that Dr. Swantz has done an excellent job in capsulizing the history of the prefederal order marketing situation during the years 1900–1930. It has pretty much been my conclusion that the characteristics of milk production, the characteristics of milk as a farm product for sale, and the characteristics of distribution and pricing problems that we now live with are still the same as those that existed in the 1900–1930 period. So, actually, our problems, based on these characteristics, have changed but little since that earlier period. We have come up with some solutions to these problems. Most of these solutions, however, might be different than those of earlier years only because of the difference in people who are working on the solution and are causing the problem.

I would like to take a little different tack than Dr. Swantz with reference to the history of these milk marketing problems under the federal order system.
