Progress Report on Cow Pool Development

J. Robert Strain

Dairy Marketing, Iowa State University, Ames

ABSTRACT

A cow pool is a dairy installation where cows of many owners are housed, fed, and milked in a central location on contract.

Four such pools have been opened in the Midwest on this basis. The first was Fashion Farm Cow Pool, at Meservey, Iowa. It opened in August, 1958, and is operated by Carroll Morris. Two years later, it had 400 cows milking and another 350 dry. Plans are to add another 500 cows to permit a year-around milking-string of about 800 cows. The second operation, Modern Dairy Farm, at Fort Madison, Iowa, started in July, 1959, and now has 460 cows. The operator, Herb Freel, plans to handle 600 cows in his pool. White Dairy Pool at Waukon, Iowa, operated by Robert White, commenoed operations in January, 1960, and had 260 cows in August.

In addition to the above privately owned operations there is a Cooperative Cow Pool near Erie, Kansas.
