ABSTRACT

A method is described which eliminates the necessity for ashing in the determination of strontium90 in milk. After the addition of a known amount of strontium carrier, the milk is treated with an equal volume of 24% trichloroacetic acid. The solution is filtered and the alkaline earths precipitated from the filtrate by adjusting the pH to 8.5–9.0 with NaOH in the presence of Na2CO3. The alkaline earth precipitates are separated and analyzed as described previously for milk ash (8). The results of strontium90 analysis on alkaline earth precipitates are not significantly different from the results obtained by analysis of milk ash.
