New Ideas in Evaporators and Dryers

J. P. Terrett

C. E. Rogers Co., Detroit, Michigan

ABSTRACT

This material on new ideas will be divided into three major categories. First, the necessary foundation for present or future development. Secondly, the five major subjects involved in development. And thirdly, some specific items of major subjects for evaporators and dryers.

The foundation of development, particularly in the field of evaporation and drying, is the ability to predetermine and control certain conditions within the machines. If these conditions vary for any reason it is, in effect, changing the entire design of the equipment. These conditions are pressure within the first effect and the liquid level control in the evaporator.

In a dryer, these conditions are a given delivery of air in terms of pounds, a given heat release resulting in a precise air temperature, a specific static pressure within a drying chamber, continuous product removal, and continuous operation of dust removal equipment. These conditions demand the use of instrumentation and automation to create an index from which to work.
