Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, and Chloride Distribution in Bovine Semen

ABSTRACT

Potassium is more concentrated within the sperm cells of bovine semen than in seminal plasma. Sodium and calcium are more concentrated in the seminal plasma than within the sperm cells. Varying concentrations of sodium and potassium in seminal plasma are characteristic of individual bulls and of the ejaculate, when consecutive individual ejaculates are considered. As an average, sodium and chloride concentrations are found to increase, and potassium and calcium concentrations to decrease, as increasing consecutive individual ejaculates are analyzed.
