Dairying in India1

K. M. Shahani

ABSTRACT

Milk is an important source of animal protein and fat in India, where a large majority of the people are vegetarians. Dairying in this country is in the developing stage. In spite of the great numbers of cattle, milk production and milk consumption are low. Milk and its products are relatively expensive for the average Indian.

Geography. The Republic of India, a subcontinent in southeast Asia, is situated entirely north of the equator, with its lowest tip at latitude 8°. It spreads over 1,700 miles from east to west and about 2,000 miles from north to south. It has a total land area of about 1.3 million square miles—about half the size of the United States. The total population is nearly 370 millions, or more than twice that of the United States.

Agriculture. India is primarily an agricultural country. The Government report (7) shows that although there has been a steady shift towards urbanization, only 17% of the population live in about 3,000 towns and cities, 83% live in more than 600,000 villages, and 500,000 of these villages have a population of less than 1,000 each.
