Using Plant Personnel Efficiently

Carl W. Hall

Department of Agricultural Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing

ABSTRACT

The latest and most modern equipment is not always the answer to using plant labor efficiently. Using plant labor efficiently involves proper arrangement and balance of equipment, and use of proper work methods. Work methods can be developed by plant personnel through a "do-it-yourself" campaign. An analysis should be made, using the questioning attitude, considering the possibility of combining, eliminating, or simplifying operations, or changing the sequence of operations. Unproductive work should be eliminated; time saved should be devoted to productive work. Unproductive time by the worker is often the fault of management, for not providing proper work conditions and work place. So this is your challenge—set up the job as you would have it if you were carrying out the operation.
