Inspection and Grading Branch, Dairy Division, Agricultural Marketing Service USDA, Washington, D. C.
ABSTRACT
The Secretary of Agriculture is authorized, under the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946, to develop and improve standards of quality, condition, quantity, grade, and packaging; to recommend and demonstrate such standards, in order to encourage uniformity and consistency; to inspect, certify, and identify the class, quality, quantity, and condition of agricultural products, including dairy products, under such rules and regulations as the Secretary of Agriculture may prescribe—including assessment and collection of such fees as will reasonably cover the cost of the service rendered.
This action is undertaken with the purpose that agricultural products may be marketed to the best advantage, that trading may be facilitated, and that consumers may be able to obtain the quality of product they desire. The service is operated on a voluntary basis and performed upon request of an applicant. Responsibility for conduct of the grading service has been delegated to the Dairy Division of the Agricultural Marketing Service.
