Status of the Problem of Diet and Coronary Heart Disease

Zoe E. Anderson, Director of Nutrition Research

National Dairy Council, Chicago, Illinois

ABSTRACT

The primary cause of death among adults in the United States is arteriosclerotic and coronary heart disease. At a given age, more men and more women die from heart disease in the United States than in other countries for which statistics are available. Some clinical and actuarial evidence indicates that the incidence of the disease is increasing. The most frequent deaths at earlier middle age occur among our white adult male population.

This problem has captured public interest, because it touches so closely upon the lives of everyone. The medical profession is intensely interested, because of the magnitude of the problem as it confronts them in their daily practice. The dairy industry and all food industries are vitally concerned because diet, particularly dietary fat, has been suggested as one possible contributing factor in the development of atherosclerosis, the underlying disease responsible for coronary heart disease.
