Official Grading and Control of Dairy Produce for Export

J. A. Ruddick

Dominion Dairy Commissioner, Ottawa, Ontario

ABSTRACT

In bringing this subject before the convention I wish to state at the outset that while I personally believe in the principle of grading dairy produce and other commodities for export, I am not here at the moment to advocate the adoption of such a system in connection with the export of our butter and cheese, or to urge it upon the dairymen of Ontario at the present.

Some months ago, at a conference with the provincial deputy ministers of agriculture, the subject was discussed, and it was agreed that the grading of dairy produce for domestic trade or for educational purposes might be considered a provincial function, but that grading for export was essentially a dominion function. During the last session of Parliament a resolution calling upon the government to establish a grading system for export dairy produce was introduced in the House of Commons.
