ABSTRACT

Shepherd Retires from Federal Service

JOSEPH B. SHEPHERD, Dairy Husbandman in the U. S. Department of Agriculture, retired May 15, 1953, after 36 years service. He has been a member of the Bureau of Dairy Industry since its inception in 1924. After graduating from the University of Nebraska he began his government career in 1917 in the Dairy Division of the Bureau of Animal Industry. Since 1945 he has had direct charge of the forage and pasture investigations in the Bureau at Beltsville. During recent years he has conducted investigations on pasture management and methods of forage preservation.

Mr. Shepherd was largely responsible for the development of the wilting method of making grass silage, which has received wide acceptance and has provided farmers with a low-cost, efficient method of harvesting hay crops for silage. He also developed a technique useful in studying the fundamental chemical and bacteriological changes which take place in silage making.
