The Carrier State of Lactic Streptococcus Bacteriophage1

D. M. Graham2, C. E. Parmelee3 and F. E. Nelson

Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station, Ames

ABSTRACT

Certain normally developing multiple-strain cultures of lactic streptococci found to carry bacteriophage have been investigated. The evidence suggests that there exists in these cultures an equilibrium between sensitive bacteria, resistant bacteria and the associated bacteriophage, resulting at each transfer in incomplete lysis of the sensitive strain, thereby continually providing substratum for the associated bacteriophage.

In a multiple-strain culture, the numerical relationships between the various strains are not stable; the relationship may change considerably from one transfer to the next. Presence of bacteriophage is one of the factors which may cause this type of shift.
