Determination of Carotene in Silage1

H. L. Mitchell and D. B. Parrish

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station, Manhattan

ABSTRACT

The Mitchell and King (1) procedure for determining carotene in fresh plant tissue is suitable for the determination of carotene in silage. Sampling error with this method is much less than with a modification of the Peterson et al. (2) method. Autoclaving sorghum silage before drying did not appear be be necessary in the analysis by this method.
