Negative Pressure and Nursing by Calves1

Vearl R. Smith and W. E. Petersen

Dairy Division, University of Minnesota

ABSTRACT

Conclusions: From the observations made in these experiments, it is apparent that the calf can develop a negative pressure as great as, and more often in excess of, that required in the milking machine to milk hard-milking cows. It is further demonstrated that the calf cannot obtain milk by nursing when a tube is inserted in the mouth to prevent the development of negative pressure. This tube did not interefere with the action of the tongue or jaws, and therefore it is presumed that the calf cannot obtain milk from the teat by the compressing action of the jaws.
