ABSTRACT
- The effects of thyroidectomy upon the general appearance and behavior of immature and mature bovine are analogous to those reported for other mammals.
- Partial thyroidectomy failed to produce any symptoms of hypothyroidism in immature or mature bovine.
- Growth was definitely retarded by thyroidectomy.
- Growth was resumed during the late states of pregnancy, probably due to beneficial effects of the thyroid of the developing fetus.
- The physical manifestations of estrus and male breeding behavior were absent, although the production of fertile ova and sperm occurred, as shown by birth of three normal calves from thyroidectomized parents.
- Thyroid therapy restored normal breeding behavior in the male and female.
