Some Studies of Lactation Records

T. E. Woodward

Bureau of Dairy Industry, Agricultural Research Administration, United States Department of Agriculture

ABSTRACT

The lactation records of 15,442 cows in dairy-herd-improvement-association herds, which had been collected from 12 states and used in a study of the influence of season on milk production(2), were available to the writer for subsequent study and analysis.

The results of three studies are given in this paper that show: 1) the influence of the month of calving on production; 2) the average lactation curves of low-, medium-, and high-producing cows; and 3) the influence of the stage of lactation on milk yield and percentage of butterfat.

Influence of month of calving on production

The influence of the month of calving on both the persistency of milk production and the total milk yield for the lactation period is a subject of considerable interest to dairymen and extension workers. Information on this subject would be helpful to a dairyman in deciding at what time of the year it is best to have his cows calve, in order to take advantage of market requirements and favorable prices of milk and feed.
