ABSTRACT
Conclusions: The total water requirement of dairy calves seems to be rather definite at various ages up to six months. Free water does not seem important for calves receiving liquid milk until they are at least eight weeks of age, but becomes increasingly more important as the calves become older. When liquid milk is removed from the diet, calves tend to drink enough more free water to compensate for the water in the milk, thereby keeping the total water intake about the same as for calves fed liquid milk. The relationship between total water intake, body weight, and dry matter consumption was quite constant, especially after the tenth week.
