The Effect of Corn Oil on Milk and Butter Fat Production and on the Composition of Butter Fat in the Dairy Cow

T. S. Sutton, J. B. Brown and E. W. Johnston

Laboratory of Physiological Chemistry and Department of Animal Husbandry, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio

ABSTRACT

  1. The ingestion of one pound, per day of corn oil by a dairy cow showed no significant changes in milk or butter fat production.
  2. The corn oil decidedly changed the composition of the butter fat.
The fatty acids were more unsaturated, of higher mean molecular weight, and the content of volatile soluble acids was reduced.
